The Doll Domination and the Battle between Wonder Girls and 2NE1

10 Aug

pussycat-dollsIn 2001 The Spice Girls announced that they will be having a break and will concentrate on their solo careers.  A year after, Beyonce thought she needed more limelight than she’s getting than being just the lead of Destiny’s Child and decided to go solo while Kelly and Michelle also tried their luck away from Beyonce’s shadows. The music scene mourned later that year when Lisa Left Eye Lopez died in vehicular accident and left T-Boz and Chilli of TLC. Oh and don’t you forget the girls of All Saints who followed the trend of disbanding in 2001.  They have tried to reunite in 2006 but their reunion was only as a good as a Top 30.

I thought the all-girl group mania would vanish after then.

But na-a. Nicole Scherzinger along with the rest of the gang of Pussycat Dolls (PCD) is dominating the world music scene since 2005 with their non-stop hits plus, their moves which bring everybody to the dance floor. Who could resist the inviting rhythm of their hits like Push the Buttons, Don’t Cha, When I Grow Up, Sway, Jai Ho (You are My Destiny) and Hush Hush Hush? PCD has become the most popular and best selling female group in the world at the moment.

Proof of the doll domination in the Philippines is their much successful concert held last June 11, 2009 at the Concert Grounds of SM Mall of Asia. It was their second in the country and the large increase of the crowd since their first concert in July 2006 shows how great their popularity has grown in 3 years.

Wonder Girls vs. 2NE1

If you are an aficionado of Myx Music Charts, you would notice that two spots in the daily top 10 hitlist is consistently held by two all-girl group from Korea- one battling to be on top of the other.

If you’ve been listening to the radio recently, you’ve surely heard of two catchy danceable songs despite their Chinese-sounding lyrics?

Or if you have watched recent episodes of ASAP ’09 and SOP Rules, you’ve definetly seen the shows’ beautiful mainstay stars singing to the tune of either Nobody by the Wonder Girls or Fire by 2NE1 in a grand production number.

Do I smell a Korean all-girl group mania here?

Wonder Girls is composed of Yubin,Ye Eun (Yenny), Sun Ye (Sun), Sun Mi (Mimi), Sohee.

In just more than 3 years, the girls have released 4 albums in Korea and garnered awards and recognitions left and right since 2006. Not to mention their own TV show.

2NE1’s popularity here in the Philippines may be attributed to Sandara (now known as Dara) being one of the girls in the group. Who could forget her powerful charisma which was proven when she earned more than a million text votes from the audience during the finals of Star Circle Quest Season 1?  It remains a record to break.

To complete the quartet are CL, Bom and Minzy.

2NE1 (pronounced either To Anyone or 21) was introduced by Y8 just last March of 2009 and they have already scored three hits and earned a number of awards and recognitions in barely 5 months. Lollipop, I Don’t Care and our favorite Fire have not only topped music charts in Korea but also those of the neighboring Asian countries including the Philippines.

No doubt that Koreamania has taken over most of the Filipino people now. It all started when ABS-CBN introduced F4 of Meteor Garden in 2003 followed by numerous korena novelas aired in all different tv stations here in the Philippines. But the invasion did not just stop there. Korea has also penetrated the world of music industry. I believe everybody is familiar already of Fire by 2NE1 and Nobody by The Wondergirls since both groups have been in the MYX Charts of Studio 23 and most of the radio stations for the last few weeks. Eventhough the lyrics of their music is in korean that most Filipinos do not understand, they have been doing a miraculous job with their music, not to mention, a nice dance choreography in their music videos which people try to dance whenever they would hear the songs. I first heard of Fire by 2NE1 and I knew right there and then that it will reach popularity. In a short notice, I have seen that it is still keeping it’s number 2 spot in the MYX daily countdown followed by Nobody by Wondergirls at number 3. Historically, Wondergirls started on the 11th spot and they may had the hard time reaching the top 3 but gradually proven that they can do it as well. However, compared to 2NE1 who started at the 2nd spot where it did not stop there and finally reached the number 1 spot but only lasted a day. I still keep track of their careers until now and if David Archuleta’s charisma in Touch My Hand fades away who, by the way, has been in the number 1 spot for 8 consecutive weeks already, surely, one of the said all-female groups will set a new path for the weeks to come.
