Angelica Panganiban was a revelation last year when she played Scarlet dela Rhea, a bitchy woman everybody loves to hate in now defunct drama series in ABS-CBN entitled Iisa Pa Lamang. She was cast alongside acting greats like Claudine Baretto, Gabby Concepcion, Cherry Pie Picache, Laurice Guillen and Susan Roces. Scarlet’s confrontation scenes with Katherine (Claudine) and their quotable lines were the talk of the town those days and uploaded videos of them on YouTube earned thousands of views. Scarlet-inspired blogs had also been put up, a proof of the character’s indisputable popularity. Philippine Movie Press Club couldn’t just take no notice of Angelica’s beyond par performance as they nominated her in the Best Actress for Drama category in their23rd Star Awards for television happening on November 29, 7PM at the Pagcor Grand Theater, Ninoy Aquino Avenue, Paranaque City.
I was left with almost nothing to look forward to on TV when Iisa Pa Lamang ended November 7 last year. Urgh… I’ve drafted an email recently addressed to ABS-CBN Entertainment Department Head to bring Scarlet back and almost sent it before I heard about a new kapamilya show that stars Angelica in a title role to be launched soon. The 23-year old actress is set to top-bill the Philippine version of Rubi, a Mexican telenovela which featured Barbara Mori in 2004. I bet that’s something to look forward to aside from Angelica’s upcoming movie- I Love You Goodbye an entry to the Metro Manila Film Festival this coming December.
Rubí is a story of beautiful woman from a middle-class family who managed to study in a university due to her sister’s effort. Rubí is best friends with Maribel, a wealthy young woman who walks with a limp which makes her inferior despite her wealth and above average beauty. Rubí meets Maribel’s boyfriend Héctor and his best friend Alejandro. Rubi is ambitious. She is greatly driven by her ambitions that she’s up to do basically everything to get what she wants.
ABS-CBN heads have done a number of deliberations before they arrived to the final decision of who will play the bida-kontrabida role. Kristine Hermosa was allegedly chosen to play it but turned it down because her religion does not permit her to accept such role. That’s just plain nonsense because I believe, in general, that an actor should hold no boundaries in terms of playing roles as it proves his versatility in his craft. Well anyways if Kristine indeed declined, then it’s good as it paves the way for me to see Scarlet er Rubi, I mean Angelica Panganiban on TV again.
Diether Ocampo, Jake Cuenca, Shaina Magdayao, Kaye Abad and Cherry Pie Picache (yes, the wicked Isadora) join the powerhouse cast of Rubi which will be shown soon on Primetime Bida.
